Sonic the Hedgehog Movie to be Released in 2018

Sega Sammy, the Parent Company of Sega, is working on a motion picture featuring the lovable “blue blur,” Sonic the Hedgehog. Hajime Satomi, Sega Sammy’s president and CEO, was quoted saying “Sega Sammy Group is currently planning with Sony Pictures to create a live action and animation hybrid Sonic the Hedgehog movie scheduled for release in 2018,” in an interview with The World Folio. With confirmation that the film would be a combined live action and computer-generated movie, I can’t help but think of the classic Who Framed Roger Rabbit?

Sega will be working with Sony Pictures to make the film, but there is also speculation that the movie slated for a 2018 release could be a replacement for the Sega and Sony-announced CG animated film in 2014. During that announcement, it was then mentioned that the CG animated film was in production at Japanese studio “Marza Animation Planet.”

Our spiky blue friend is no stranger to the big and small screens; Sonic has appeared in numerous animated series on television and had a few cameos in Wreck-It Ralph. Long-time fans will wish the best for a Sonic the Hedgehog movie, since Sega has tried with many games to revitalize the blue hedgehog to a semblance of his former glory… I personally just hope the Sonic movie doesn’t look something like this –

Great article Dr.Kendo! I hope this turns out to be a great movie. The live action animation scares me a bit. Maybe their going to set the theme up like Sonic Adventure. You know, real life people walking around town like in Station Square or something. I’m just curious how they are going to create Dr. Eggman. I wonder if they’re going to animate him or have a real life person play him.

Thank you WallyWin; I agree with you, but I’m trying to just take the stance of “Let’s see what they do with it, then we’ll judge.”

I think you and I both just hope/wish the best for Sega and Sonic, as it’s a franchise we know and love!
