Modmic 5 from Antlion Audio Review

Antlion Audio has worked hard to turn their award winning attachable boom mic formula, coupled with audience feedback, into THE headset for gaming, streaming, or VoIP and more. But if you haven’t heard of the company and their sleek ModMic line of headsets, you’re in for a treat. The ModMic is not just some ordinary headset. It is a flexible modular microphone attachment that can be affixed to any pair of headphones. Get ready to turn your most favorite headphones into a high-performance headset with Antlion Audio’s newest product in the ModMic line:

The base clasp for the ModMic 5 adheres to any surface securely and the magnets within are incredibly strong, holding the microphone in place well. This 5th generation of ModMic products improves on the original design across almost all aspects, adding dual mic capsules, a fully modular cable system, and premium grade materials to deliver the pinnacle of custom audio. Just a simple slide up or down on the switch makes the ModMic 5 go from studio quality to noise canceling mode through the dual capsule system built into the mic boom. This means that a single ModMic can go from a quiet home environment where quality is needed for recording or streaming to a noisy gaming event where noise cancellation is essential.

The most common feature requested by customers was a fully modular cable system. Antlion Audio delivers by allowing users to select the right cable length for their needs and quickly swap over to different devices, such as PC, current-gen consoles, or smart phones. Included with the modular cables is a detachable mute switch module and a new cable wrapping system that ensures perfect cable management, keeping the cords from the headphones and the ModMic tied together.

The Good and the Bad

The Goods – I do really like the idea of users being able to keep the headphones they want and turn almost any pair into a headset. All of the components needed to do so are provided, and even keeping all kinds of cable preferences in mind since cable wrapping is also provided. The process of attaching the ModMic to your favorite headphones is as easy as peeling the back off the adhesive and then just sticking it onto the surface of the headphones, and that ease of installation is necessary for this level of customization in a gaming headset. I also give the company kudos for the epic Antlion carrying case.

The Bads – Fortunately for most users, my negative feedback may not be as relevant, but I am a *big-time* stickler when it comes to audio quality. This is not a mic I would record my YouTube commentaries with. The company boasts exceptional audio quality, and I believe it will sound that way on a casual session with your friends, but I do not consider this a studio-quality headset mic (although to be fair, out of the 3 headsets I’ve owned before this, none of them have been studio quality). The ModMic 5 elicited a constant hiss or hum, depending on setting, and the noise cancellation setting practically made it so that my voice was nothing when recording. Noise cancelling is fine, but we still need to hear our voice!

Score

7 out of 10!

In the headset space alone, perhaps this deserves an 8 out of 10, but just as an overall piece of tech and as recording equipment, a 7 is just about right. The best thing about the ModMic 5, and the ModMic line, is the uniqueness and innovative idea of turning any pair of headphones into a good headset. What it lacks in sound quality, it can obviously make up for with that original idea in mind. Purchase your ModMic 5 today or just learn more here!
